I liked it, but the first first person shot stops moving abruptly I think

jumpbreak96 responds:

was intentional but should have kept walking until the next shot I guess.

I guess it works as an animation showcase and a knock at anime tropes, but beyond that it's pretty devoid of content. If you're an animator then it would probably be fun to watch, but the joke "anime is predictable" has been made a million times before, even by anime itself...

edit: wow my most popular review yet... Thanks guys!

I feel like I've seen this before, specifically with jawbreaker. It is a pretty predictable formula; normal cartoon episode beginning, weirdly worded speech and then something awful happens.

He is disgusting

BatteryMasterMMD responds:

A true funny boy is always disgusting.

I like the writing. I just wish the visuals weren't neglected, so that every aspect of the video made me uncomfortable; Sure, the facial animations were disturbing, but I feel like the backgrounds were made to be ignored, when they could have added another surreal dimension. If there was some camera focus on how quiet and empty the neighborhood is, not just him telling us it's empty and scary, it would've been much more immersive.

I love this voice acting!

This writing is fantastic!

That was incredible

It's definitely a show about being "just as good as TV" despite being independent, as the writing relies heavily on tropes very indicative of derivative network cartoons (tropes largely adopted due to the feedback of the standards and practices department (trying not to damage kids after the free for all during the 90s) and getting the go ahead of the executives (hoping for a safe sell). To a certain degree, I thought it succeeded at that goal, with some clear exceptions:

From a plot standpoint, I felt it would have benefited from giving us a look at the aftermath, like an exterior shot of the mom walking in and yelling, something more than just ignoring what happened and having them say what they learned (that goes for the stolen credit card too). I also think the stray cats should have had a more believable reason for how they got in, not just breaking a window (maybe the sly cat friend put his paw in the door when the pizza man tried to close it?). Not sure why scoops was scared in the corner when the cats broke in, or why the cute cat growled at him, more tropes I guess? And the fact that they wanted bacon pizza and their baby sitter was doing pizza reviews never went anywhere, I thought up until the very last second that she was going to walk in and say something sarcastic about pizza; she could do reviews of anything stupid in the entire world, but her picking pizza out of all those things feels like an oversight. And last, but not least, are cats known for their attraction to pizza?

The main strength was definitely the production, as the animation and designs were both good. A few times it felt like it cut down the frame count to save time (the sea of partying cats melting together when dancing and running away), but it could be argued, if done in the correct contexts, this would add to the network feel of the show, since they too cut corners (often). Occasionally the line widths were off, the most suspect examples being the zoom in on the baby sitter at the beginning and the zoom in on Ollie after the cats first break in. In terms of readability, everything was clear as day except for two situations: it was hard to read Scoops flavor can while he was shaking it, and zooming into Ollie's face right after the cats first broke in was disorientating. Though all in all, very impressive when you consider it's an independent production!

The voice acting was pretty good. I didn't expect the sultry cat to have the voice she did, which was fun but also momentarily distracting. If all the stray cats are going to have the same feel to them, of being self satisfied caricatures (like how pirates got their famous voice from doing impressions of what they thought rich people sounded like), I'm all for it. Ollie definitely feels like an adult's impression of a young girl, though, and scoops was a pretty generic cartoon character.

As far as first episodes go, it felt more like a proof of concept rather than an intro to the premise. I couldn't tell she was actually talking to the cat (and not just very imaginative) until I read the Patreon post, for instance, and we got nothing about "...the secret underground society all cats have that humans don't know about!".

It was a bit slow, but the art and animation was really great
